Nina visits Dr.Geitel and tells him that she doesn't have any memories from before she was ten. In one of his Law school classes, Nina has a panic attack after the class was analyzing a case where a family with two children was murdered. In Cologne, Tenma investigates about a kid named Michael, who he assumes to be Johan. Nina receives a new e-mail that reads "I will come for you soon."

Chapter 10: Prince on a White Horse[]

Monster 10 13

While still investigating the couple murders, Tenma visits Hanover and Munich. In Munich, Tenma meets an Old Man, war veteran, who informs him that he knew Johan (who went by the name Franz back then) and that he told him about Dr. Tenma. The Old Man tells Tenma that Johan was a brilliant kid who mastered English and French and was interested in the Old Man's World War II stories because of the element of terror. The Old Man finally shares with Tenma that Johan told him that he would go and get Nina in her 20th birthday in Heidelberg. Nina's foster parents remember that they promised to tell her that she is not their real daughter when she turned twenty. In Heidelberg University, Nina sees Johan and faints immediately.

Chapter 11: Missing Person Article[]

Monster 11 4

Tenma visits Jacob Maurer, editor of the Heidelberg Post, and asks him for help after the police turned him down. Tenma tells Maurer that Johan and Nina escaped from the hospital after he treated them and that he infers that the twins came to Heidelberg and were adopted shortly after, but Johan escaped; thus, a report for a missing child must have been placed on the newspaper by his foster family. Nina talks with Dr. Geitel about the episode where she fainted after seeing Johan and tells him that she felt pure evil after when she saw him. Later, Nina receives a new e-mail from his secret admirer, telling her to meet with him at the Heidelberg Castle. Tenma and Maurer find an article about a missing kid and a disappearance report filed by the Fortners. Maurer goes through the data and learns that the twins birthday is that day.

Chapter 12: A Birthday of Terror[]

Monster 12 1

It is Nina's birthday and she calls her parents to tell them that she will be meeting with a friend at the Heidelberg Castle. Tenma and Maurer rush to the Fortners' house. On the way there, Maurer talks about how he covered the couple murder scene in Cologne and thinks that what he saw was different from any other crime scene, like "it was work of the devil". Tenma and Maurer arrive to the Fortners' but the couple is reluctant to talk about Nina, but Maurer tells them that Nina's life is in danger. The Fortners tell them that Nina went to the Heidelberg Castle to see a friend and Tenma rushes there in Maurer's car. Maurer stays with the Fortners and tries calling the police, but he is unable, because the phone line has been cut. Tenma arrives on time to the Heidelberg Castle and meets Nina, but he is attacked by Ivan Kürten, who tells him that we was asked to keep Nina there. Tenma and Nina disarm Kürten, tie him using Tenma's tie and interrogate him, finding out that Johan has planned to kill the Fortners before meeting Nina. Tenma and Nina leave the scene and rush to the Fortners' house.

Chapter 13: House of Tragedy[]

Monster 13 17

Tenma and Nina arrive to the Fortners' house to find that Maurer and the Fortners have been killed. Soon, a couple of detectives, Detective Messner and Detective Müller appear at the scene and ask Tenma and Nina that they must go with them to the police station. On their way, Tenma notices several strange things such as Messner telling them that they will not go to Heidelberg police station but to Mannheim's, that actually there was never a phone call to the police and that Messner has blood on his coat. The car stops in a checkpoint on a bridge. Tenma is already suspicious of the detectives and asks if it is okay if he and Nina get out of the car so she can have a breath of fresh air. Müller then calls Tenma "Dr. Tenma"; Tenma realizes those two are not legitimate detectives and he and Nina jump to the river.

Chapter 14: It's Not Your Fault[]

Monster 14 6

After escaping, Tenma and Nina hide in a cabin in the woods. There, Nina tells Tenma that he remembered how she and Johan crossed the border and how Johan killed everyone that took care of them, including the Lieberts back in 1986. Tenma goes back into town and learns that police is investigating the murder of the Fornters, Maurer and Ivan Kürten and also that Messner and Müller happen to be real cops. Inspector Lunge visits the Heidelberg Castle crime scene and finds Tenma's tie. Tenma returns to the cabin but finds that Nina is gone and that she left a letter where she tells him that it was not his fault to revive Johan because it was his job. Tenma takes a train.

Chapter 15: Pursued[]

Monster 15 9

Inspector Lunge visits Eva Heineman to find more about the necktie that was found at the murder scene in the Heidelberg Castle. Lunge tells her that he did some research and discovered that the tie was sold only to the best clients and Eva's name was on the list. Eva tells him that she cannot recall who did she gift the tie. Dr. Tenma returns to Eisler Memorial Hospital, where he is visited by Eva, who tells him that she wants to start over because Tenma was the only one who truly loved her and that she protected him from Lunge, who came by her house and asked about the tie, that was a gift from Eva to Tenma. Tenma rejects her and Eva tells him that she will go to the police and explain everything. Lunge goes to Eisler Memorial Hospital to arrest Tenma as suspect of the Heidelberg Castle murder, but Tenma manages to escape in an ambulance after resigning to the hospital. Five months later, Tenma hitchhikes to Verden, when another couple murder has happened, this time, he is carrying a gun.

Inspector Lunge interrogates Hugo Bernhardt, a retired soldier who trains people in marksmanship seminars. Five months earlier, Tenma joined Bernhardt's seminar to learn how to use guns. The seminar took place in Bernhardt's property, where he lived with a Burmese girl, whose mother was killed by Bernhardt in Myanmar during one of his assignments. Bernhardt tells Tenma that the girl has never smiled since. Tenma departs and leaves an envelop with the money and some Japanese food he cooked for Bernhardt and the girl. Bernhardt is unable to eat properly using chopsticks and the girls laughs because of this. Back to the present, Lunge asks Bernhardt if he know where Tenma is headed, but he does not answer.
